Blind brush cytology has been used in the past; however, with the availability of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), its use has diminished. It is performed by passing a cytology brush in a sheath similar to a nasogastric or orogastric tube.

Once the end of the catheter is in the mid esophagus, the brush is extended and brushings are taken. Gastro-Esophageal Cancer. In book: PET and PET-CT in Oncology, pp ES-guided cytology may become helpful for confirming the ES diagnosis of lymph node metastasis.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorder in the United States, and leads to substantial morbidity, though associated mortality is rare. The prevalence of GERD symptoms appeared to increase until Risk factors for complications of GERD include advanced age, male sex, white race, abdominal obesity, and tobacco use.

Figure Anatomy of the esophagus. Unlike the remainder of the gastrointestinal tract, the esophagus does not have a serosal layer and its strength is derived from its mucosa.

The thoracic esophagus is covered only by parietal pleura, making this portion the weakest and the most common site of perforation in Boerhaave syndrome, usually on. Most adenocarcinomas of GEJ arise in background of reflux esophagitis and follow Barrett metaplasia-dysplasia-carcinoma sequence Small number occur in background of Helicobacter pylori gastritis with same presumed mechanisms as H.
